    Passport Program - SUMMARY
    Passport
is an academic enrichment and college-advising program for Black and Latino high school juniors. The program is designed for the student who has a desire to attend college but for whom entering college seems impossible. Participants are from low or moderate-income families, and will be the first-generation to attend college.

Passport is a curriculum-based holistic approach to helping students develop the skills, motivation and determination necessary to successfully enter and complete college. The program admits students at the beginning of their junior year of high school as part of a cohort of 15, who remain in the program until graduation from high school. If the students successfully complete all the requirements of the program, they are eligible for a HERC scholarship.

Passport continues communication with program graduates during the students’ college years to ensure students are succeeding and utilizing support services available to them.

Applications accepted from high school juniors. Call (508) 756-0900 for details.

  • M.A.S.T.E.R. Program - Math And Science Technology Education Resource
A six month academic program for African-American, Latino, and American Indian high school students interested in science, mathematics and engineering.

The M.A.S.T.E.R. program, which is a collaboration between Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and the Higher Education Resource Center (HERC), aims to strengthen minority high school students’ skills and abilities in the fields of math and science. The program is designed to help urban high school students explore the engineering, math and science fields of study to motivate and prepare them for pursuing further education in these areas after high school.

During the program, classroom style sessions will be conducted on specific subjects, offered by different WPI departments. Participants will learn the importance and relevance of these subjects in our daily lives (i.e. chemistry, calculus, trigonometry, algebra, etc.). Also, a number of SAT preparatory sessions will be conducted to assist students in achieving competitive scores. In addition to the various academic related sessions, participants will work with the guidance of WPI students to complete hands-on project. Some prior projects include the design and construction of a robot car, implementation of a Java computer program, and research regarding turning light into sound and much more.

MASTER is not only work! The participants will have an opportunity to develop relationships with WPI students, and get a chance to discuss worries, concerns and expectations regarding the college experience.
